HOMAGE TO ROTHKO
Marc Rothko was a true genius whose color field paintings revolutionized modern American art. He did not consider himself an abstract painter, "My art is not abstract," he said, "it lives and breathes". He didn't like to talk about his work, feeling that the paintings spoke for themselves, either making a connection with the viewer or not. No explanation is possible. "Silence is so accurate," he said, "the words would only paralyze the viewer's mind." For Rothko "A painting is not about experience. It is an experience." If you have stood before a Rothko canvas, you know what he means. |
