Chelsea Flower Show opens a Summer of Royal London Events
by Burlington Bertie
The RHS The Chelsea Flower Show, described by London's ebullient Mayor Boris Johnson as "The Mount Olympus of horticulturethe world's most famous flower show", opens on 20 May in the grounds of the Chelsea Royal Hospital exactly 100 years to the day after the first show in 1913.
Graced on that occasion a century ago by Queen Mary, Consort to George V and grandmother of our present Queen, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has been attended by Her Majesty and green-fingered members of the Royal Family every year since. Prince Charles has twice exhibited gardens at the show and royals are patrons of a number of exhibiting charities.
Chelsea is a colorful horticultural start to Royal London's hectic two-month season of royal pageantry, social, sporting and cultural events in London and Windsor. The Royal Family's number of social engagements rises dramatically in June, while their conventional working roles remain undiminished.
The Royal London season continues unabated until the end of July when Queen and court move to Balmoral for a summer break and the Buckingham Palace staterooms and the Houses of Parliament are opened daily to the public.
