Sales trawling in London's West End should be fun. I find great excitement in nabbing that covetable Gucci dress in silver metallic, that sensuous satin negligee trimmed with lace from Rigby and Peller's lingerie selection, a Chanel handbag perhaps, or hot heels from Jimmy Choo, in a West End designer store which is marking goods down by a whopping £100 or more to clear the rails for the Spring Season. As for those sensible clothing and footwear classics, I can buy them any time in the High Street without the hassle of checking over non-returnable Sale leftovers.

This time I have compiled a list of resolutions that will save me from expensive mistakes and tears.

• I will make a list of items I need to update my wardrobe so that I am focused in my Sales shopping.
  
• I will look for quality belts. They are always expensive, so I keep an eye out for a Sales bargain.
  
• I will look for exciting wedges and platforms at Jimmy Choo and other shoe shops. They are still in style this coming season.
  
• I will look at coats - the mild Autumn has left retailers with overstocked racks they will want to clear. Bargain prices!
  
• I will only buy things I really love or need.
• I won't buy anything too small. If it is too small in the fitting room it will still be too small when I get it home.
  
• I won't buy anything too large unless it can be easily altered by my local seamstress.
  
• I won't buy anything that is inferior to an item already in my wardrobe. No duplicates!
  
• I won't buy anything in Chartreuse, last season's 'hot' colour, whatever the discount. I look terrible in it! So, probably, will you!
• I won't buy anything on impulse just because it's a bargain. My wardrobe and shoe racks are full of unworn impulse buys!

Rather than list shops by category, I have listed them by street, as this is the way I personally like to shop when trawling the West End Sales. I prefer to bargain hunt with my friend Georgina. We can be brutally honest with each other about chic and colour when one of us is tempted to splash out on something irresponsibly wild just because it's discounted! We shall start at the beginning of the week in the relative calm of Jimmy Choo's shoe shop in South Kensington, progress from there to Sloane Street in Knightsbridge, where we shall find time to look in at the exclusive fashion store of Georgina's favourite coutourier Maria Grachvogel, at 162 Sloane Street, before checking out all the designer shops that have opened up there recently. Later in the week we shall visit Bond Street and Mayfair, and finally tackle the hurlyburly of Regent Street and Oxford Street.
